Apple rolls out iOS 121 update for iPhones and iPads with Group FaceTime, Dual SIM support, real-time Depth Control in camera and new Emojis

Apple has started rolling out the iOS 12.1 update to iPhone and iPad users worldwide. The much awaited update brings three key features to eligible iPhones and some to iPads as well. For iPhones, the update brings Group FaceTime calls, Dual SIM support, real-time Depth Control in the camera and new Emojis. iPads also get the ability to place Group FaceTime calls as well as support for 70+ new Emojis. To check if you have received the update, head over to the ‘General’ tab under Settings and tap on Software Update to see if your device can be updated to the latest version of iOS. Below is a list of devices that are eligible to receive the iOS 12.1 update: Supported iPhone models IPhone X iPhone XS iPhone XS Max iPhone XR iPhone 8 iPhone 8 Plus iPhone 7 iPhone 7 Plus iPhone 6s iPhone 6s Plus iPhone 6 iPhone 6 Plus iPhone SE iPhone 5s Supported iPad models 12.9-inch iPad Pro 2nd generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro 1st generation 10.5-inch iPad Pro 9.7-inch iPad Pro 9.7-inch iPad 6th generation (2018) iPad 5th generation (2017) iPad Air 2 iPad Air iPad mini 4 iPad mini 3 iPad mini 2 Group FaceTime Apple first introduced Group FaceTime calls with the iOS 12 update, but the feature was in development for the longest time and is only now making it to eligible iPhones and iPads. With Group FaceTime, users can initiate video calls with up to 32 participants at the same time. Users can also add effects to their FaceTime calls such as stickers, filters, Animoji and Memoji. When an invitation is received, people can choose to join using audio or video from iPhone, iPad and Mac. To make active speakers more prominent during Group FaceTime calls, their video window will automatically pop up when they start speaking. Apple says, “FaceTime uses on-device intelligence to display the most prominent speakers on the call.” Everyone else on the group call can see their image windows get resized automatically to accommodate that of the active speaker. Participants who are not active will appear at the bottom of the screen until they speak. A simple tap also brings a participant front and center. A feature called 'Ringless notification' lets users join Group FaceTime calls instantly through a notification, without disrupting the ongoing call. Group FaceTime calls can also be initiated straight from iMessages if you are already engaged in a group conversation on the app. if people in a conversation have already started a FaceTime session, Messages shows the active call in the conversation list and inside your conversations. Apple says all Group FaceTime calls are end-to-end encrypted, which means that no one, not even Apple, has access to them and they cannot be dug up later, even if requested by the authorities. Depth Control in Camera It is possible to control the depth in Portrait photos with the new iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR. But the feature would only allow depth adjustments after an image was clicked. Now with iOS 12.1, users can control depth information in real-time and dynamically adjust the depth of field while clicking photos, in addition to post-capture. Users will find a new ‘f’ icon at the top right of their screens in the camera app, tapping which, will bring up the depth slider.  Portrait mode with Depth Control is also available on the TrueDepth camera for selfies, which includes Memoji. The update also adds faster face tracking support for third-party ARKit apps. Dual SIM With iOS 12.1, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR get Dual SIM support -  one nano-SIM and another digital eSIM. Users can activate an additional cellular plan from a carrier that supports eSIM services without having to use a physical nano-SIM. In India, Apple has listed Airtel and Reliance Jio as eSIM providers. We have reached out to Airtel and Jio to understand how and if iPhone users in India can activate eSIM support on the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR. New Emojis Lastly, Apple is adding more than 70 new emojis to iPads and iPhones with the iOS 12.1 update. There are new characters with red hair, gray hair and curly hair, a new emoji for bald people, more emotive smiley faces, additional emoji representing animals, sports, food, new emoji for moon cake, red gift envelope, nazar amulet, softball, lacrosse, luggage, compass, hiking boot, llama, mosquito, kangaroo, lobster, bagel, salt, cupcake, leafy greens and mango, and more.

OnePlus 6T with in-display fingerprint sensor, Waterdrop notch and Snapdragon 845 launched at 549

Weeks worth of teases, leaks and reports later, the OnePlus 6T is finally official. The company has announced the phone at its New York event and as expected, it comes with an in-display fingerprint sensor, the headphone jack is gone and the shape of the notch has changed as well. While the OnePlus 6 featured a rectangular notch, the OnePlus 6T gets a smaller waterdrop notch, which is similar to the one we have seen on the Oppo F9 Pro. Considering that BBK Electronics is the parent company of both the phones, this doesn’t come as much of a surprise.  OnePlus 6T Specifications The OnePlus 6T is equipped with a 6.41-inch Optic AMOLED 19.5:9 display with a 2340 x 1080p resolution, putting its pixel density at 402 PPI. The screen also gets the newer Corning Gorilla Glass 6 protection and OnePlus says that the new notch design has helped push the device’s screen-to-body ratio to 86 percent, up from 83.8 percent of the OnePlus 6. While the phone doesn’t feature a nearly bezel-less design, it is a step in the right direction as the ultimate goal for smartphone makers right now seems to be going completely bezel-less. OnePlus says that it has also improved the brightness levels, colour accuracy, and colour range of the display.  As expected, the OnePlus 6T is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC that can clock speeds of up to 2.8GHz and comes in two variants, one with 6GB RAM and 128GB of internal storage and another with 8GB RAM, coupled with 256GB of internal storage. It sports LPDDR4X RAM and UFS 2.1 2-Lane storage. As the leaked GeekBench and AnTuTu scores revealed, the phone is running on the latest OxygenOS, which is based on Android 9 Pie operating system. The new OS brings plenty of improvements and many new features to the phone such as updated Gaming Mode and Smart Boost that is said to improve app start up times by 5 to 20 percent.  In term of optics, the OnePlus 6T carries over the same camera configuration as its predecessor. On the rear is a 16MP + 20MP dual camera setup with Sony IMX 519 and Sony IMX 376K sensors respectively. The 16MP primary sensor gets a f/1.7 aperture with 1.22µm pixel size, while the secondary 20MP sensor also comes with a f/1.7 aperture with a pixel pitch of 1.0µm.  The rear camera also supports Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS), Electronic Image Stabilisation (EIS) and as AI is also used on the device, AIS. The phone’s main camera can shoot 4K video at 30/60 fps, Full HD video at 30/60 fps, 720P video at 30 fps and also Super Slow Motion videos at 1080p and 720p resolution at 240 fps and 480 fps respectively. Sadly, no super slow motion video recording at 980fps yet. The phone also gets a new Nightscape mode that the company says can help in capturing much better low-light images than its predecessor. There is also a newly developed Night HDR, especially for this purpose called Nightscape. The new feature will also be soon rolled out for OnePlus 6 but no exact date has been provided.  On the front of the phone is a 16MP Sony IMX 371 Sensor with f/2.0 aperture, EIS and a 1.0µm pixel size. The front sensor is placed in the tiny notch, which also houses a three-in-one ambient, distance and RGB sensor. Same as the OnePlus 6, one will be able to hide the notch from the phone’s settings. The whole package is backed by a 3700mAh battery, which is touted to deliver 23 percent of additional runtime. OnePlus 6T pricing The 6GB+128GB version of the OnePlus 6T is priced at $549 (Rs 40,277), while its 8GB RAM with 128GB storage costs $578 (Rs 42,400 approx). There is also an 8GB+256GB model of the device, which will cost $629 (Rs 46,100 approx). The smartphone will start shipping from November 1 in the US and November 6 in Europe. The India pricing of the phone will be revealed at its local launch event tomorrow.
