Samsung Galaxy A80 with slide-up rotating cameras launched alongside Galaxy A70

Samsung just launched one of the most exciting phones in a long time and it's not even a flagship. The Samsung Galaxy A80 features a slide-out mechanism and rotating cameras, marking a sharp wedge away from the usual smartphone form factors. Samsung also announced the Galaxy A70 alongside it, and both devices are aimed at Gen-Z, the generation succeeding millennials. The launch event centered around users who use the front camera not only to take photos but also stream live videos on TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram and the likes.
Samsung Galaxy A80 features and specifications
Thanks to the slide-out cameras, Samsung was able to offer an edge-to-edge display with minimal bezels that stretches 6.7-inches diagonally, making it the largest display ever on a Samsung device. Naturally, you won't be able to use it one-handed. The panel has 1080x2400 pixels resolution with 20:1 aspect ratio.

The phone is housed in an aluminium casing with glass on both sides. The rear glass panel curves along the edges to offer a better grip.

The Galaxy A80 runs on the newly announced Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G, a chipset tuned specifically for gaming with an overclocked GPU and support for HDR gaming. Considering this isn't an HDR, that might not be possible, but the Snapdragon 730G's ISP comes with a Computer Vision unit that, in tandem with a 3D ToF sensor, offers portrait mode while recording videos. There's 8GB RAM onboard along with 128GB storage with no option to expand it. There's also no 3.5mm headphone jack.

The A80 also has the same ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensor for authentication that's there on the Galaxy S10 while the display also doubles up as the earpiece by sending sound vibrations through the screen while on a call.

Now the cameras. The Galaxy A80 houses a triple camera stack which includes a 48MP camera sensor with f/2.0 aperture along with an 8MP wide-angle sensor offering 123-degree field of view. The third sensor is the 3D ToF sensor that's used for depth measurement. The entire camera stack along with the LED flash and the laser autofocus is housed in a separate unit made of plastic that rises up from the frame. The camera unit then flips over to the other side becoming the front camera. The entire motion takes around 1.2 seconds to complete and looks quite cool.

Samsung Galaxy A70 features and specifications
The Samsung Galaxy A70 is positioned just lower than the A80 and combines features from other A-series phones released so far with a 32MP camera on both the front and the back added as its unique feature.

The Galaxy A70 also features a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED display but with a U-shaped notch on top. This doesn't get the swivelling cameras, so the screen is not entirely free of distraction. This too has an in-display ultrasonic fingerprint sensor.

The rear panel is made of glass with a similar scattered light colour treatment as the galaxy A80 with the triple camera unit on this arranged vertically along the edges.

The camera stack includes a 32MP season with an f/1.7 aperture along with an 8MP ultra wide-angle lens with 123-degree field of view and a 5MP depth sensor. On the front is another 32MP sensor with f/2.0 aperture. That way, Samsung claims the image quality will be the same from both the front and the back.

Under the hood, the Galaxy A70 runs on the Snapdragon 675 paired with either 6GB/8GB RAM and 64/128GB storage. This one does have the option to expand the storage up to 512GB and has a 3.5mm headphone jack to boot.

While the Galaxy A70 is not as radically exciting as the A80, it should be the preferred option for those who still prefer a device with no movable parts.
Pricing and availability

Huawei Mate X reportedly listed briefly on companys online retailer website with a June release date

Huawei unveiled its foldable Mate X smartphone at Barcelona, during MWC earlier this year. The foldable display on the device sure looked promising but no one was allowed to physically experience how it works or feels when the screen is folded. The company recently announced that the handset would be brought to India later this year but didn’t provide an exact date. A slip-up from the company’s side might have accidentally revealed when the device will be made available for purchase. The company reportedly listed the phone by accident on its online official online store in China, Vmall.

The listing has been taken down now but a Russian site managed to get a screenshot of it. As per the image, the Huawei Mate X is supposed to be released in June. Specifications of the device are already known, and there was no price mentioned on the leaked listing. It is a 5G smartphone that is equipped with the company’s Balong 5000 chip. The smartphone employs a 'Falcon Wing' mechanical hinge for enabling folding on its display which, when folded, is 6.6 inches in size with the OLED panel sporting a 2480 x 1148p resolution. When unfolded, the phone features an 8-inch display with a resolution of 2480 X 2200 pixels.

The phone folds inwards, which enables it to use a single camera for snapping images in both the main camera and selfie mode. The Mate X is equipped with a 40MP wide-angle camera, a 16MP ultra-wide lens and an 8MP telephoto lens. It is backed by a 4,500mAh battery that supports Huawei’s Super Charge at a wattage of up to 55 watts. The Huawei Mate X comes with 8GB of RAM and 512GB of storage and is priced at 2,299 euros. The handset measures 11mm thick when folded, and 5.5mm thick when unfolded.

Related Reads:

Huawei Mate X foldable smartphone to launch in India later this year

Samsung unfolds Galaxy Fold with two displays, six cameras and app optimisations

Concept images of unidentified Asus Zenfone device with dual-slider leaked

OEMs are now focussing on incorporating an edge-to-edge display on their phones and have resorted to methods like punch hole display and pop-up camera mechanism to achieve their goal. Another way to achieve the notchless display is by adding a magnetic manual slider, like we have seen in the Mi Mix 3. Asus is the latest company to jump into the fray and is now reportedly developing a phone with a dual slider design. Although there is not much information on the name of the device, the rumour mill is calling it the Asus Zenfone 6.

The images have been shared by famous tipster Evan Blass who claims that he got the renders from “one of ASUS's Zenfone 5 designers.” It could be due to this fact that the phone is being called the Zenfone 6. When asked, “Zenfone 5? Shouldn't that be 6?” in the message thread, the tipster replied by saying, “Why would you say that?” suggesting that the handset may have a different name altogether.

On the contrary, Asus Zenfone 6 has purportedly been spotted on Geekbench and AnTuTu listing in the past. The phone is said to bear the model number ASUS_I01WD and was listed on both benchmarking plaforms with the mentioned number. It is also being reported that Asus will launch the rumoured Zenfone 6 in Valencia, Spain on May 16.

Now coming back to the renders, the striking things that the images show are the different type of sliders. By 'different types' we mean that each sliding option is seen sporting different hardware. While one image shows Harman Kardon speakers sliding out from the bottom, the other image shows cameras popping up from behind the phone. He also shared another set of photos that show a touch panel sliding out from the bottom and dual-cameras with dual flash sliding out from the top.

There is a difference in the design of both phones as well. While one shows more rounded corners and metal finish, the other one is seen having regular edges, a wider display and it seems to have a glass finish. As far as the hardware is concerned, the rumoured Zenfone 6 is said to ship with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor with X50 5G modem. It may pack 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, and run Android 9 Pie-based ZenUI. Both phones are seen sporting a dual camera setup on the back.

Related Read:

Asus Zenfone Max Shot and Zenfone Max Plus M2 introduces Qualcomm's Snapdragon SiP1 system-in-package chip

Another riff on the concept. pic.twitter.com/b1ti4VAeSv
— Evan Blass (@evleaks) 7 April 2019

Battle royale doting millionaire wants to set-up real life last person standing arena with Rs 90 lakh prize

Bruce Wayne from the DC comic universe is an enthralling billionaire who owns a conglomerate and transforms into Batman to fight crime with his million-dollar gadgets. However, in real life, there’s only so much a wealthy person can do. Don’t mistake this story to be about someone who is trying to become Batman in real life. Oh no, this is about an unknown millionaire who is a fan of the battle royale games, and to such an extent that the person wants to create a ‘last person standing’ arena on a private island. The ad for such a setup is live on HushHush.com, which is an online luxury marketplace.

As per the listing on the website, one of its customers wants a private island where “a championship” can be set up. The ad is for a gamemaker (the term reminds us of Wes Bentley's character from The Hunger Games movie) who can help organisers design the arena. The event is supposed to last three days and contestants participating in it will be provided with Airsoft guns, ammo and touch-sensitive body armour. As per the ad, the last person standing will win £100,000 (Rs 90.5 lakhs approx) as prize money. However, it won’t be as easy as playing a battle royale game on a console or mobile device. The participants will be ‘hunting’ others for 12 hours every day and camp at night with food, camping gear and other relevant equipment that's provided.

If you are someone who has the kind of contacts and capabilities to pull off an event at such a large scale, go ahead and apply for the ad here. Maybe even send us an invitation to compete in the championship but then again, on second thought, what could go wrong when contestants are placed on a remote island, which is most likely away far from civilisation, and handed ‘airsoft’ guns to compete in a battle royale scenario? The odds don’t really seem to be in the player’s favour, do they?

Related Reads:

PUBG Mobile 0.12.0 update sneak peek: New weapons, zombies in Survive Until Dawn and new Darkest Night Zombie mode

PUBG Mobile Club Open 2019 tournament and Alan Walker On My Way Cover challenge: All you need to know
