Netflix is testing out its Mobile+ plan, priced at Rs 349 per month in India

Netflix is currently testing a new Mobile+ plan in India priced at Rs 349 monthly that offers HD streaming for phone, tablet or PC. It does not include streaming on TV and follows the basic mobile plan which costs Rs 199. The Mobile+ plan offers HD streaming on a single device and that could be your smartphone, tablet or PC.

In a statement to the media, Netflix said “We launched the Mobile plan in India to make it easier for anyone with a smartphone to enjoy Netflix. We want to see if members like the added choice this offer bring. We will only roll it out long-term if they do.” The Mobile+ plan is only being trialled with select users currently and based on the adoption rate Netflix will decide whether the plan can be added to the roster permanently.

Netflix is testing out its Mobile+ plan for Rs 349

The Mobile+ plan by Netflix offers HD streaming on your smartphone, tablets or PC but does not support the television. The company announced the Mobile plan back in 2019 and now with the Plus plan, users can watch Netflix on their computers as well. So, if you are someone who watches a lot of movies and TV shows on your PC, the Netflix Mobile+ plan could be perfect for you.

If you want to watch Netflix on your TV, you might want to check out the Basic, Standard, Premium plans that offer up to 4K streaming and support for up to 4 concurrent streams. The Basic plan is priced at Rs 499, the Standard plan is priced at Rs 649 and the Premium plan is priced at Rs 799 in India. The Mobile+ plan sits between the Mobile and Basic plans and is an extension of the mobile-only plan that the company has introduced in some markets.

Netflix isn’t the most affordable streaming platform in India and its move to trail a new Rs 349 Mobile+ plan could be indicative of a strategy shift as the company wants to reach out to a wider audience in the country.

If you're looking to check-out some new films or TV shows on Netflix, here's our list of recommendations for the best fantasy movies, best anime TV shows, best superhero films and best sci-fi films that you must watch.

— Mr·white (@laobaiTD) July 19, 2020 Latest iPhone 12 leak reveals the Apple A14 Bionic chip

In a report on Tom’s Guide, TSMC states that the 5-nanometer chip is “about 15% faster but uses a full 30% lower power than the current 7nm node that is in the Snapdragon 865 Plus or Apple A13”. What this means is that the Apple iPhone 12 could have longer battery life while retaining that speed and smooth functioning. The chip will also be powering all the iPhone 12 models including the base iPhone 12 to the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

In other iPhone 12 news, it is speculated that the iPhone 12 could be one of Apple's tiniest phones yet. You can read more about that story here. In fact, leaked renders of the phone also show off a 5.4 inch screen as well a notched OLED display and dual rear camera. You can check out the leaked image here. And finally, Apple could exclude the charger and earpods from the iPhone 12 box when it does launch. You can check out more about that story here.

BadPower attack can damage your smartphone by overloading fast chargers

Security researchers have identified a new form of vulnerability with fast chargers called BadPower that can damage your smartphone by overloading the fast charger with an unusual amount of voltage. This issue was identified by the researchers at Xuanwu Lab in China wherein they found that it is possible to modify the firmware of the fast chargers in order to deliver faster-charging speeds than the connected device can handle leading to a complete breakdown of the device and even burn internal components.

For instance, the standard charging voltage is set at 5V for many devices and if you connect a fast charger it will supply 5V even though it is capable of providing faster charging. BadPower works by modifying the default charging power to increase voltage which results in damaging the connected device as it is not supported to run on such high voltages.

BadPower attack can damage your smartphone

BadPower attack is automated and doesn’t require any special equipment to deploy as researchers have indicated that it can be also be installed on smartphones and laptops. If a smartphone or a laptop is infected with BadPower, it can execute the malicious codes to modify the fast charger’s firmware when the user connects to it. After the fast charger is corrupted, whenever the user connects any device for charging, the adapter will automatically overload the power, damaging the connected device.

In its report, the researchers mention that they tested 35 fast-charging adapters and discovered that 18 models from eight companies were vulnerable to BadPower. While most BadPower vulnerabilities can be patched by updating the firmware, 18 fast chargers have been identified to not ship with any firmware update option which means that an OTA update isn’t possible.

However, the researchers do clarify that they have notified the affected companies about the BadPower vulnerability and is working with these manufacturers to prevent any unforeseen attacks. The researchers have also recommended these companies to add overload protection on the fast chargers.

Fast charging technology is growing at a rapid rate and recently we saw Oppo and Realme announce their 125W fast charging solution that will debut on smartphones sometime later this year.

The man behind the Google Pixel Camera joins Adobe to make a camera app for all

After leaving Google in March, Marc Levoy, the man behind the Pixel’s powerhouse camera, had made Adobe his new home. The company announced that Levoy will be helming the Vice President’s seat. Marc will now lead a team that works on Photoshop Camera as well as Abode Research, and Digital Imaging divisions. For those that do not know who Marc Levoy is and why this is such a big deal, Levoy was the man behind the tech that was used in the much lauded Pixel range of smartphones. His work on features such as Portrait Mode, HRD+ and Night Sight has pushed the field of AI to not depend on hardware for certain effects but to rely on the software of the device.

Mark Levoy joins Adobe as Vice President

Marc Levoy was also responsible for the development of the camera for the first generation of Google Glass. As the announcement was made, Levoy looks to be working on better cameras for all phones, as the company has talked about his work being “centered on the concept of a universal camera” as reported by The Verge. Maybe we could see companies like Facebook have their own camera app that uses technology that Levoy could be working on.

Marc Levoy was not the only loss for Google though, as Android Authority has reported, the company also lost Pixel general manager Mario Queiroz who left the company two months before the Pixel 4 was to be launched.

In other Google news, the company has recently announced a Rs 75,000 crore fund to boost India’s digital growth. You can read more about that story here. Reliance Jio has also partnered with the search engine giant to launch entry level 4G and 5G phones in India. You can read more about that here. And finally, just a few weeks ago Google removed 25 apps from the Play Store for phishing Facebook log-in details. You can find out what the names of the those apps are, right here.

Pricing will decide the fate of OnePlus Nord in India

OnePlus Nord will launch in a couple of hours later in an AR launch event that’s scheduled to begin at 7:30 PM IST. The launch marks the company’s re-entry into the affordable mid-range segment with much of the features and specifications already out in the open basis of leaks and official teasers. The price of OnePlus Nord remains the last piece of the puzzle that will determine the phone’s value in the overcrowded smartphone space in India. Will it be a phone that offers the true OnePlus experience at a really affordable price point? Or does it fail the expectations it has set in the minds of the consumers ahead of the launch?

OnePlus, once a champion of offering “flagship killers” isn’t new to the affordable segment as it is the genesis of this smartphone marker. Starting from OnePlus One that launched in India for Rs 21,999 to the latest OnePlus 8 series that starts from Rs 41,999, the company has breached price segments with every iteration. In fact, it tested the waters in its younger days with the OnePlus X that was priced at Rs 16,999 in India but had a short shelf life due to several issues plaguing the phone and hence failed to grab more eyeballs.

OnePlus Nord to be priced under $500

OnePlus Nord: leaked design render

OnePlus has only hinted once about the price of the Nord and stated that it will be priced below $500-mark which is around Rs 37,000 by direct conversion. Remember that the phone has been confirmed to feature a Snapdragon 765G chipset, six cameras, 90Hz high-refresh-rate display and fast charging. The only other phone with Snapdragon 765G is the recently launched Vivo X50 series that starts at Rs 34,990 in India and here’s where OnePlus could undercut the competition and aim for a more affordable price point for the Nord.

Apple iPhone SE 2020 starts at Rs 42,500 in India and at that price it becomes unaffordable for budget-minded customers, which is something OnePlus should not do. With the Nord, it wants to target the segment it once left behind, opening a space for an aggressively priced mid-range smartphone between the price range of Rs 25,000 to Rs 35,000. The current offerings in this space include the Redmi K20 series, Vivo X50, Realme X3 SuperZoom, Oppo Reno3 Pro and more but none of them have been able to capture the market, barring the Redmi K20 series which has been out since July 2019.

OnePlus Nord expected pricing

The closest competitor of the OnePlus Nord just in terms of on-paper specifications is the Vivo X50 which runs on the same chip as the Nord. There are subtle design and cosmetic differences between both the phones but the idea behind OnePlus undercutting the X50 has to do with the fact that the company still sells the OnePlus 7T that starts at Rs 34,999. With that segment already covered, the company could go aggressive with its affordable smartphone and price it even lower than Rs 30,000 for the base variant.

A price of around Rs 25,000 while seemingly unreal, could, in fact, propel the company to expand its offerings across different budget ranges and is sure to please a lot of interested people looking to purchase a smartphone at under Rs 30,000. Then again there is a lot that the OnePlus Nord is expected to bring to the table such as 5G support and the OxygenOS experience along with two selfie cameras. As such, we believe the pricing of the OnePlus Nord could be closer to the Rs 30,000-mark and could even start at Rs 29,999 for the base variant.

There’s also the case of a difference of Rs 6,000 to Rs 7,000 between the various phones offered by OnePlus as spotted by the good folks over at TechPP, which could mean that OnePlus could also go aggressive by pricing it at Rs 27,999 or Rs 28,999. It’s also likely that the company prices the base variant at under Rs 30,000 and the rest of the variants are priced over that price point. Then again, the current economic crisis, the GST rate hike and supply chain disruptions could play a role in a price tag that exceeds expectations.

Nevertheless, this is just speculation as we await the launch and price reveal of the OnePlus Nord in India. It will be interesting to see how OnePlus positions the Nord in India as it continues to sell the OnePlus 7T, OnePlus 7T Pro, OnePlus 7T Pro McLaren Edition and the OnePlus 8 series.
